PRAYAGRAJ

DAY 1

Allahabad, also known as Prayag, has a rich historical legacy dating back ages. The city earned its name from the Mughal emperor Akbar. Referred to as the “Tirth Raj” or the king of all pilgrimage centers, Prayag is extensively mentioned in the Epics, Vedas, and Puranas.

Located at the confluence of three rivers — Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati (the latter being a mythical river)—Allahabad holds great spiritual significance. The meeting point of Ganga and Yamuna is known as Sangam, where numerous sacred fairs and rituals take place, drawing thousands of pilgrims year-round. The most prominent among these gatherings is the Kumbha Mela, attracting millions from across India who come to bathe in the holy waters of Sangam.

Upon arrival in Allahabad, visitors often proceed directly to Shiv Mutt where rituals are conducted. Here, the karta undergoes Vapanam, a ritual shaving, followed by a bath in the Triveni, the confluence of the three rivers.

KASHI

DAYS 2-7

Varanasi, Kashi, Banaras – No matter what name you call it by, this is one of the oldest and
the holiest cities in India. Most devout Indians have a dream of making the pilgrimage to
Kashi, known as the Kashi Yatra, at least once in their lifetime.
Kashi has many attractions for the spiritually as well as historically inclined.
This is where rituals are performed for the propitiation of departed souls. Traditionally, rituals for one’s
forefathers are performed at all riverbanks, since rivers are considered especially sacred. Among them,
the Ganga is the most revered, and thus, performance of these rituals on the banks of the Ganges at
Kashi takes on an entirely new significance.

Kasi is the place for liberation as well, apart from salvation – liberation from the cycle of births
and deaths. Having experienced misery several times in life, no sane person wants to be born
again and again in this world. During ancient days, aged people undertake Kasi Yatra, walking all
the way to Kasi from their places, just to die in Kasi (for salvation). Most of them will never return
to their places.
The main purpose of the yatra is to perform rituals and visit temples like Viswanath, Visalakshi,
and Annapoorni. There are many temples to see and hence it is called City of Temples. A dip in
Ganges and Triveni Sangam and prayers at Viswanath and Visalakshi Temples will help cleanse
our sins and facilitate Moksha. At Kasi, Ganga Pooja is the most famous one and performed
daily.

GAYA

DAY 8-10

According to tradition, it is believed that Lord Brahma performed the first Pinda daan at Gaya, and this practice has been maintained since then. Performing Srarddha at Gaya is emphasized in the Puranas, and it is considered essential to perform Srarddha there at least once in a lifetime. The priest (purohit/vadhyar) will explain the rituals and significance of Gaya Srardha when performed at home. The Vayu Purana provides detailed instructions on the ancestral rites conducted at Gaya Kshetra. It is believed that by offering Pinda daan to our ancestors, their souls will attain salvation.

Every human being is indebted to Pancha and there is no freedom from the debt of mother. But one should always keep trying and there is a special responsibility towards the one to whom one is indebted. Being indebted to the mother, a person has a special responsibility towards the mother. Therefore, on pilgrimage, there is an independent method of donating 16 pindas for the mother, which is done only for the mother.
